Allison is on the flute faculty of The Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program (MAP). Additionally, she maintains a private flute studio with students of all ages from Manhattan, Brooklyn and Northern New Jersey. She is also available for Skype lessons for flutists from all over the world to take advantage of.
Students learn skills to develop their tone and technique, all while learning etudes and standard flute repertoire. Particular care is taken to foster each student’s unique artistic voice and concept of sound. Depending on the student’s interest and level, additional time will be spent on improvisation and memorization. Each lesson ends with sight-reading flute duos, which further enriches the student’s listening and ensemble-playing ability.
In the late spring, all local students participate in a studio recital. Additionally, the studio participates in outings to concerts and attends the annual New York Flute Fair. In an effort to create a small and supportive community, students have the opportunity to play for one another in informal studio classes. This is to gain performance experience, to learn to listen critically to their colleagues and to provide constructive feedback.
Students from Allison’s studio have been accepted into competitive programs and schools including Interlochen Arts Camp, the Special Music School, LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts, the New York Youth Symphony Chamber Music Program, InterSchool Orchestras of New York and many more.
